Michelle Obama recently addressed ongoing rumors about her marriage to Barack Obama, taking the opportunity to not only clear the air but also reflect on the pressures women face in society. The rumors, which have been circulating for a while, gained more attention after Michelle’s absence from two key events in early 2025.
Michelle was a guest on Sophia Bush’s podcast, Work in Progress, where she spoke candidly about life as an “empty nester.” With her daughters, Malia (26) and Sasha (23), now living on their own, Michelle shared how this new chapter has brought a sense of freedom and self-focus.

“The interesting thing is that, when I say ‘no,’ for the most part, people are like, ‘I get it,’” Michelle explained. “It’s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me.” She went on to express how challenging it can be for women to put their needs first, especially when it means possibly disappointing others.
Michelle’s comments came in response to speculation that she and Barack were headed for divorce. This was sparked by her missing both the funeral for former President Jimmy Carter and the inauguration of Donald Trump in January 2025. Though Michelle did not specify why she chose not to attend, her absence fueled rumors about her marriage, especially since Barack attended both events.
The rumors were further fueled by a story in In Touch Weekly, which claimed actress Jennifer Aniston was trying to win Barack’s heart. Aniston quickly denied these claims, saying, “I’ve met [Barack] once. I know Michelle more than him.”

Despite these rumors, Michelle Obama took the opportunity to remind listeners that as a woman, she has every right to make decisions for herself without the weight of societal expectations. Her message emphasizes the importance of prioritizing one’s own well-being and choices.
